Pecan 101
How should I store my pecans and how long do they stay fresh?
Pecans contain a high fat content, so they are prone to spoilage or rancidity over time if they are not stored properly. Roasted and candied pecans are even more prone to go bad as they have been subjected to very high temperatures in the process. In-shell pecans will generally last longer. Pecans stored at room temperature in a sealed, airtight container should stay fresh 30 to 45 days. In the refrigerator, in an airtight container, they can last 6 to 9 months. For the longest freshness, store pecans in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 years. Pecans can be thawed and re-frozen multiple times.
When are Pearson Farm pecans harvested?
Our pecan harvest begins in mid-October and lasts through the end of the year. We typically harvest enough pecans during that time to sell at least some varieties until the next harvest. In shorter crop years, certain varieties may sell out earlier.
"puh-KAHN" or "PEE-can"?
The great debate! Pronunciation often depends on where you call home. Many in the Northeast say "PEE-can," while Southerners say "puh-KAHN." For some, it is more than pronunciation — it reflects family traditions, heritage, and regional pride. At Pearson Farm, we say "puh-KAHN." How about you?
Are your pecans free from contamination with other nuts?
We clean, shell, and cook our pecans in facilities that are free of any other nuts.
